Black holes are mysterious and difficult to observe. The first one was only identified in 1971, and black holes were not photographed until 2019! Black holes are not empty space: a black hole represents the greatest concentration of mass anywhere in the universe. So, if black holes are so hard to observe, how do we know about them at all? Black holes have a large impact on space and astronomical objects around them.
