In a recent viral video, I created a custom summary table in Microsoft Excel—and the comments flooded in: "Why not just use a pivot table?" Well, this video is my answer.
In this video, I explain why I stopped using pivot tables in Excel and how it has helped me advance my career in finance and data analysis. Pivot tables are quick, but relying on them can be a lazy career move. They lack the polish and personal branding you need to stand out in the competitive fields of financial analysis and FP&A. By taking the extra time to customize your outputs, you can create professional reports that reflect your unique style—and that could be the key to landing on the right desks (even the CEO’s!) and making a positive splash.
To be sure, I’m not saying pivot tables don’t have their place in Excel, but if you want to build a strong personal brand and get recognized for your attention to detail and quality work, this video is for you.
The punchline is we should reconsider how we use pivot tables and be sure to always put in the effort to craft your work -- it might just open doors to career progression.
