Before the Spanish arrived in Mexico, Mesoamerica was home to many advanced civilizations, from the Maya in the south to the Aztecs in central Mexico.
Known for their monumental architecture, these cultures built powerful city-states, including the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan, established in 1325 on Lake Texcoco.
The city thrived until Hernán Cortés arrived in 1519, eventually conquering it by 1521, leading to the destruction of many Aztec monuments.
Today, archaeological discoveries at Templo Mayor and Teotihuacan, along with Mexico City's National Museum of Anthropology, reveal insights into the Aztec and pre-Aztec civilizations, preserving their legacy.
