In this session, guest presenter Kane Snyder will take us on a tour of what Calculation Groups can do for you and for your end users.
Kane Snyder is a power BI developer and data analyst, calculation groups fanatic, craft beer nerd and unsuccessful musician. He currently works as a consultant for Agile Analytics, a Microsoft Gold Partner based in Sydney.
"Calculation Groups?" I hear you mutter. "What the heck are they?".
Think better insights, more dynamic interactivity, and more people slapping you heartily on the back saying "If it wasn't for you, this place would likely crash and burn, whatever your name is".
Calc Groups effectively let you write a DAX-driven function that accepts Measures as parameters. A better geek than me would probably say they are "...a collection of meta-measures that take other measures as input and alter the filter context." But I like to think of them as a generic scaffold that lets you enhance (or even completely replace) what *any* existing measure in a visual returns ...as well as changing its formatting for kicks while you're at it if you want.
What's more, a Calculation Group can comprise of *multiple* of these functions - called Calculation Items - and these items can be applied to visuals (including slicers) almost as if they were a pre-existing dimension in your model. You simply drag the Calculation Group into a visual and BOOM you (potentially) get more numbers and deeper insight(s) than you had before.
